Stage Picture – Summary in Biography

Topic: Main Idea in a Biography 
CLI Strategy: Stage Picture 
Subject: ELA
Grade: Upper Elementary 

Students will be able to: Create a stage picture to summarize the main idea and supporting details in a biography passage. 

Procedure:

Prompt Version I 

  • ​Explain to students that you are going to create a “museum exhibition” of an important person or event.
  • Ask what moments or details from our reading would be important to add to the exhibit.
  • Students come up one at a time to create a frozen statue that represents their idea.

Reflect on Image 

    • What do you see?
    • What are we representing about this person in our exhibit?
    • Based on what we are showing, what kind of person would you say they were?
    • What could we title our exhibit

Prompt Version II 

  • Create a stage picture that shows the impact this character has made on his/her community.

Reflect on Image 

  • What do you think is happening in this picture?
  • What facts from the text support that main idea?
  • What is your opinion about this character?  What evidence from the text tells you the author’s opinion about this character?  What facts does the author use to support his opinion?

STAAR Extension:

  • Read the multiple choice summaries after the passage and discuss which would best fit what we represented in the exhibit.
